Clicker Training.

When using clicker training, we can motivate the learning of new behaviors very quickly. Using the Clicker as a reinforcement of good behaviors you will be able to get much faster results when shaping behaviors to encourage the dog to problem-solve, in order to choose behaviors we like.  We can effectively communicate with the dog about what we want, rather than using harsh, verbal commands and corrections.

Dogs live in the “Now”.  So that means if you reward your dog for something even seconds after the preferred behavior, it’s too late!  With the clicker it makes it much easier for the dog to understand what we are wanting from it.  We can Click the instant the dog is performing the desired behavior or command.

Your dog will not magically get what the “Click” means so you must first let the dog learn by using the Clicker each time immediately followed by a treat. For the first few days “load” the clicker by clicking once then giving a treat.  Your dog does not have to be following any commands at first.  Just sit there with a hand full of treats and Click then treat.

Once your dog has made the association with the click and treat, then begin to teach your dog new commands and behaviors.
